BCCI’s scraped Duleep Trophy has been restored for the season: Committee of Administrators

The Board’s Committee of Administrators (COA) on Tuesday decided to restore the Duleep Trophy. A few days ago Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had scrapped Duleep Trophy for the upcoming season when BCCI released its domestic calendar. The Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket competition played in India. The competition is named on the name of Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar. Tournament played on inter zonal basis in which players from across the country categorized in five main teams named East Zone, West Zone, North Zone, South Zone and Central Zone.

Duleep Trophy is being played with pink ball since last season in 2016-17.

A few days ago the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had scrapped the tournament for the upcoming season when it released its domestic calendar. Now The Board’s Committee of Administrators (COA) on Tuesday decided to restore the Duleep Trophy for coming season. The chairman of BCCI’s technical committee, Sourav Ganguly wrote a letter to general manager MV Sridhar and asked the reason behind dropping Duleep Trophy for this season.

Ganguly wrote an e-mail to MK Sridhar, In his e-mail he wrote “I am reading in the media that Duleep Trophy has not or may not take place this season. I don’t know that’s true or not but if you remember, the members of the technical committee had agreed to use pink balls again for the Duleep matches and the tournament was supposed to be held in the same format as last year.”

At the BCCI headquarter, a meeting was held on Tuesday, after a five hour long meeting COA’s member Diana Edulji confirmed that Duleep Trophy will be played for this season. He also said “Duleep Trophy has been restored. It will be held and the logistics will be worked out. We have told the Board not to scrape it. It is a very prestigious tournament and it should be held,”

One of the reasons of BCCI to scrap the tournament is its busy domestic schedule.

Meanwhile, as per the Supreme Court’s order, the Committee of Administrators (COA) is in the process of redrafting the constitution. COA chief Vinod Rai said “It’s still work in progress. We are meeting on the September 8 in Delhi when we will finalise the constitution.”

As per new constitution court has decided October for deadline for BCCI election. When it was asked to Vinod Rai, he answered It will all depend upon when the Supreme Court will give a go ahead.

All about Duleep Trophy

The Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket competition played in India. The competition is named on the name of Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar. Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji is also known as “Duleep”. Duleep Trophy cricket competition organized between teams representing different geographical zones of India. Currently champion of Duleep Trophy is India Blue.

Duleep Trophy administrated by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The First tournament was organised in 1961–62 and Last one was in 2016–17. The inaugural tournament was won by West Zone who defeated South Zone in the final by 10 wickets. A total of five team fights to each other in the tournament every year. East Zone, West Zone, North Zone, South Zone and Central Zone are five Indian zonal teams regularly take part in the Duleep Trophy.

The most successful teams of the tournament are North Zone and West Zone who have been won the title 18 titles each.
