  • Central Government notifies changes in Banking Regulation Act- The government has notified the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Act 2017. Under the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Act, 2017, the RBI can issue directions to banks for resolution of stressed assets. The Apex Bank can also specify committees and authorities to advise the respective bank on resolution of stressed assets. RBI can appoint and approve the members in the committees. Apex Bank can also issue directions for the banks to initiate the insolvency resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 to recover bad loans. Currently banking sector is facing its biggest hurdle of non-performing assets (NPA). A total of more than Rs 8 lakh crore NPA is standing in front of Private sector bank as well as public sector banks. And out of Rs 8 lakh crore NPA, Rs 6 lakh crore is accounting for public sector banks (PSBs). The main NPAs are in sectors like power, road infrastructure, steel and textiles.
  • Automobile company Maruti Suzuki is leading Passenger Vehicle segment, As its 7 models are in top 10 list-According to the latest data from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Automobile car manufacturer company Maruti Suzuki India is leading Domestic Passenger Vehicle (PV) segment market in july. Its 7 models are in top 10 lists of best-selling brands. Maruti Suzuki Alto topped the list with the sale of 26,009 units in july. Company’s Baleno was the second best-selling model with 19,153 units. Wagon R was third (16,301 units), Vitara Brezza at fourth position (15,243 units), Hyundai’s Grand i10 stood at sixth position (12,002 units), Hyundai’s premium Elite i20 stood at seventh position (11,390 units), MSI’s Dzire stood at eighth position (11,187 units), Maruti Suzuki Celario at ninth position (11,087 unit) and Hyundai’s SUV Creta was at tenth position with sale of 10,556 units.
  • Justice J S Khehar will leave and 45th Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Misra will take office today- 45th Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Misra will take office on today. Justice Dipak Misra appointed as 45th CJI for next 13 months. His tenure may see a resolution of knotty and high-magnitude issues spanning the spectrum, from the validity of Aadhaar to the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title disputes. Justice Dipak Misra may be set up a Constitution Bench to decide the special state status accorded to the Jammu and Kashmir under Article 35A. J&K has a status of special state under a provision. This provision was incorporated in the Constitution through a Presidential Order in 1954. It is notable that this provision was not incorporated by a constitutional amendment.
  • Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit criticised PM’s Program ‘Mann Ki Baat’– On Sunday Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s radio programme “Mann Ki Baat”. Sandeep Dikshit said “Radio is not used as a platform to address important issues in the country but to make dialogues.” In a video he also said “His programme only has speeches, there is no thought behind them, no concern for any important issues.” Sandeep said PM Modi used this platform to send greetings and congratulatory messages on various occasions and festivals. Sandeep Dikshit blamed PM Modi on different issues. He asked “Why does he host the show? Is it only to make greetings and congratulatory messages on different festivals? Why do you need to invest so much in a radio show just to wish and greet?” He also asked PM Modi has not spoken on soldiers’ deaths, issues related to women safety, on plight of government hospitals after the Gorakhpur episode and on deaths in train accidents.
