Nirmala Sitharaman: India’s first full time woman Defence Minister- On Saturday Nirmala Sitharaman (58 year old) has appointed as Defence Minister of India. She with this announcement she became India’s first full time woman Defence Minister. She is the second women to hold this position ever. On Sunday, President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to her at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Nirmala Sitharaman has appointed as Defence Minister. Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas is now Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Minister of State (MoS) for Parliamentary Affairs and MoS (Independent Charge) of Minority Affairs is now elevated as a cabinet Minister.

As earlier she was holding charge of Minister of State for Commerce and Industries. Now Nirmala Sitharaman is a cabinet Minister. She will take charge of a very important and crucial ministry from Union Finacne Minister Arun Jaitley.
Ms Nirmala Sitharaman is first woman to be appointed as full time Defence Minister and second woman to become Defence Minister of India. Earlier Forme Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had served as Defence Minister of India during 1980-82. She was the first lady to hold this position.
Who is Nirmala Sitharaman?
Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman was born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. She hails from Andhra Pradesh. Currently she is Rajya Sabha MP representing Karnataka. Before her elevation to Union Cabinet, she was Minister of State (MoS) for Finance and Corporate Affairs and Minister for Commerce and Industry with independent charge.
She had obtained Bachelor of Arts degree from Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College, Tiruchirappalli and Master of Arts degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. She had obtained her Ph.D in Indo-European textile trade within GATT framework followed by MPhil. She has served at Pricewaterhouse Coopers as a Senior Manager. She has also served as BBC World Service.
She was national spokesperson for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before holding charge of Minister of State (MoS) for Finance and Corporate Affairs and Minister for Commerce and Industry with independent charge. She was member in National Commission for Women (NCW) from 2003-05. She is also founder member of Pranava School in Hyderabad.
